Clayton Lewis Guild, 87, Received Asiatic Pacific Theater Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal for WWII services.
Clayton Lewis Guild, 87 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Friday, November 29, 2002 at his home in Amherst following a lengthy illness.He was born August 28, 1915 in Amherst where he was raised and graduated from Amherst Central High School with the class of 1933. He has been a lifetime resident of Amherst.
He served in the US Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater where he received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was employed by U.S. Steel, of Lorain for 39 years retiring in 1980 as a millwright. Mr. Guild was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst where he was active in the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus, and the Senior Group. He was also a member of American Legion Post # 118, the Amherst Outdoor Life, and the Senior Citizens of Amherst. He enjoyed coaching basketball for the CYO and umpiring the Amherst Girls Youth Softball League.
Survivors include his daughters Sharon Seesholtz of Alexandria, Virginia and Mrs. James (Marilyn) Hinton of Amherst; five grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Josephine A. Guild (nee Mucha) on May 22, 1997; by his parents Charles and Angie (nee Pember) Guild; and his sisters Marion Erkins and Florence Wise.
Friends may call Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing prayers will be held on Tuesday from the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial with the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard to follow at St. Joseph Catholic Church; 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst at 10:00 a.m. The Rev. Fr. Lawrence Martello, pastor will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.
