George L. Merner, 83, WWII Army Veteran
George L. Merner, 83 of Sheffield Village, formerly of Avon Lake, passed away, Wednesday, November 27 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Merner was born, October 28, 1919 in Norwalk and had lived in Avon Lake for 37 years before moving to Sheffield Village 10 years ago.Mr. Merner retired as a supervisor for the United States Postal Service, working in the Parcel Post Anex, Cleveland, for 33 years. Upon his retirement in 1978, he worked for a time for the Diamond-Shamrock Company, Cleveland. Mr. Merner was a WWII Army Veteran, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre, with Company C, 117th Engineer Battalion as a supply clerk. He was a 1937 graduate of St. Paul's High School, Norwalk, a member of VFW Post 1079 Elyria, a member of the DAV, Louis Paul Proy Post 20 and a member of the American Legion, Post 211, Avon Lake. Mr. Merner enjoyed collecting stamps and coins.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alice E. (nee Hutton). Other survivors include 2 sons, Donald (Teresa) of Gibsonville, NC and William A. (Kim) of Solon; 2 daughters Luanne Merner of Bay Village and Georgia K. Merner-Becker (Chris) of Palo Alto, CA; 7 grandchildren and a great grandson. He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis E. and Georgeanne (nee Frechette) Merner, 2 brothers and 4 sisters.
Friends may call at the Busch-Burmeister Family Chapel, 32000 Detroit Rd., Avon, Sunday, December 1 from 4-8 and from 10-11 a.m. on Monday, December 2. The funeral services will be at the Funeral Home, Monday at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
