John J. Kobasic, 88, US Army Veteran
John J. Kobasic, 88, of Lorain, died Saturday. October 12, 2002 at Ohio Extended Care Center in Lorain following a five-year illness.He was born on September 15, 1914 in Lorain, and was a 1932 graduate of Lorain High School.
He served as a technician fourth grade in the Army during World War II and participated in the battles of North Apennines and Po Valley. He was awarded the American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal, and the European-Mediterranean Theater Service Medal with two bronze stars.
He worked as a shipper in the Shipping Dept. of Lorain Works, U.S. Steel, retiring in 1976 with 41 1/2 years of service.
He was a member of St. Vitus Catholic Church, United Steelworkers Local 1104; Life Member of Amvets Post 47 and the American Slovak Club. He was also a former long-time member of the Eagles. He enjoyed bowling.
He is survived by two brothers, Edward Kobasic and Robert Kobasic, both of Lorain; three sisters, Stella Kobasic, and Evelyn DiLuciano, both of Lorain and Elaine Niehenke of Olmsted Falls and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Marjorie (nee Washington) in 1999; his father, Martin Kobasic in 1975, his mother, Anna (nee Lukenic) in 1971; brothers, Martin Kobasic in 1984, Margaret Kobasic in 1996 and Mary Ann Simko in 1995.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 14, 2002 from 4-8 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where services will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass at St. Vitus Church. Rev. Father Simon Nekic, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Amvets Post 47 will conduct full military honors.
