John R. Harst, 79, US Army Veteran

John R. Harst, 79, of Lorain, died Monday, October 7, 2002 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center, West, following a lengthy illness.

Born August 21, 1923 in Pittsburgh, PA, he has been a resident of Lorain for the past 17 years. Prior to that he lived in Norwalk, Ohio.

He graduated from St. Bernard's High School in Mt. Lebanon, PA in 1942.

John served in the United States Army during WWII as a Cpl. and was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal.

He was employed in the Avon Ford Motor Plant as a supervisor in the paint department for 30 years, retiring in 1988.

He enjoyed playing golf and horseshoes.

He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Helen (nee Workman); 2 sons, Robb Harst of Norwalk, John T. Harst of Lewis Center, 2 step-sons, James C. Adkins of Lorain and Anthony Adkins of Berne, IN. Other survivors include 7 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, 2 brothers, William Harst of Canton, Ernest Harst of Jacksonville, NC, and 2 sisters, Catherine Harst of New York and Jean Ruppert of Pittsburgh, PA.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Harst in 1981 and Regina (nee Benz) Harst.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 10, 2002 from 6-8 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain where a funeral service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Rev. William Schill, Deacon of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be private.
