Richard Frank Moffat, 86, enjoyed crosswork puzzles and reading

Richard Frank Moffat, 86, of Westlake and formerly of Port Clinton, Ohio passed away Friday October 4 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky following a lengthy illness. He was born to the late Dana C. and Oliver (nee Brooks) Moffat on May 13, 1916 in Lorain, Ohio. Richard was put in the O.S.S.O. Home (now O.V.C.H.) in Xenia, Ohio in 1921 and graduated from there in 1934. During World War II he served in the US Army.

He attended Ohio University and received a degree in Journalism. Mr. Moffat was a Reporter and Copy Editor at the Lima News for twenty years, Telegraph Editor and Bowling editor at the Lima Citizen and Copy Editor at the Columbus Citizen, Columbus, Ohio. He also worked at Port Clinton in 1966 as Editor of the Daily News; worked as State Editor for the Sandusky Register, Sandusky and was Financial Editor for the Toledo Times and retired as a member of the Editorial Department of the Toledo Blade in July of 1982.

Richard was a former member of the William Paul Gallagher 113, Port Clinton; Elk Lodge 1718 and the Moose Lodge both in Port Clinton, the Eagles Lodge in Columbus Grove, Ohio and the AMVETS, Sandusky. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary K. (nee Kenny), whom he married August 12, 1940 in Lima, Ohio. He is also survived by hours sons, Richard of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Robert of Franklyn, Michigan; Dave of Louisville, Kentucky and Paul of Bay Village, Ohio; five daughters, Marilyn Meeks (Chuck) of Marietta, Ohio; Marie McCrate (Dennis) of Barnsville, Ohio; Carolyn Price (Randy) of Bloomville, Ohio, Katy Vega (Ray) of Jacksonville, Florida; and Julie Bott (Jerry) of Fairview Park, Ohio. Other survivors include fifteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his two sons, Howard and Michael; two brothers, Thorne and Dana and his parents.

Friends may call at the BUSCH-BURMEISTER-FAMILY CHAPEL, 32000 Detroit Rd. Avon from 6-9 p.m. Monday. Services will be at the Christian Heritage Assembly of God Church, 36465 Chester Rd., Avon, Tuesday, October 8 at 9:30 a.m. Graveside services will be held at the Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton also on Tuesday at Noon where the American Legion Post 113 will conduct military honors.
