Joan C. Dovin, 57, Elementary School Teacher

Joan C. Dovin, (nee Kruppa), 57, of Ft. Myers, Florida, died Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.

Born January 26, 1945 in Lorain, she moved to McCormick, South Carolina in 1998. For the past year, she had been a resident of Florida.

She was a 1963 graduate of Elyria Catholic High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Ohio Dominican College, Columbus, in 1967. She received her master's degree in education in 1976 from Akron University. She also did post graduate work at Bowling Green University and Ashland College.

She was an elementary school teacher in the Lorain City School System for 32 years, retiring in 1998. She taught at Lowell, Masson, hawthorn-Boone, and Homewood Elementary Schools.

She was a member of the Church of St. Peter, Lorain and the St. Peter's Chorale. While residing in South Carolina, she was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, the parish council there, and she sang with the McCormick County Chorale. She was a member of the Lorain Education Association, National Teachers Association, Northeast Ohio Teachers Association, Ohio Education Association, Business and Professional Womens Association, International Reading Association, and the Career Education Association.

In 1969, she received the "Teacher of the Year" honorable mention award, and in 1979 she received a Mini Grant for Remedial Tutoring.

She enjoyed camping, swimming, racquetball, ceramics, golfing and boating.

Surviving is her husband of 34 years, Wayne R. Dovin, a son, James J., of Akron, her mother, Clara (nee Balog) Kruppa, of Lorain, sister, Cheryl Roth of Lorain and Patricia Zink of Greensburg, PA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph F. Kruppa, 1991.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 20, 2002 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where services will be Saturday, September 21st at 9:30 a.m. followed by mass at the Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Fr. Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
