Walter Alton Higdon, 82, Welder

Walter Alton Higdon, 82 of Vermilion, died Friday, September 13, 2002 in Kingston of Vermilion following a 9 month illness.

He was born July 15, 1920 in Hartselle, Alabama.

He worked as a welder for American Ship Yard, Lorain. He also worked for many years as a mechanic throughout the area. He enjoyed fishing and camping.

Survivors include his daughters, Brenda Higdon of Athens, Alabama and Sarah Blakley of Vermilion; sons, Larry Higdon of Elyria, John Higdon of Lorain, William Higdon of Grafton, Albert Higdon of Richmond, Kentucky, Fred Higdon of Lorain and Eric Miller of Lorain; 21 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, sisters, Willie Sutton of Athens, Alabama and Vida Jenneman of Vermilion.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Annie Higdon (nee Owens); daughter, Linda Dumke, parents Willie Higdon and Amanda Black Higdon, sisters, Ella Hood, Della Schuler and Marie Klein and brothers, Gurney and Lester.

Friends may call Sunday, September 15, 2002 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home, Monday, September 16, 2002 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Edward Mitchell, pastor of First Baptist Church of Birmingham, officiating. Interment will follow in Kendeigh Corner Cemetery, Amherst Township.
