Linda L. Houck, 60, First Female Commodore of Mohican Sailing Club

Linda L. (nee Coffeen) Houck of Avon Lake died Saturday, August 24, 2002, after a two-year battle with colon cancer. She would have turned 61 on September 11. She is survived by her husband of nearly 40 years, William Houck, of Avon Lake; two children, daughter Sharon Houck, of Portolla Valley, CA, an son Davis Houck, of Tallahassee, FL; brother Steven Coffeen of Hortonville, WI; and, daughter-in-law, Caroline J. S. Picart, also of Tallahassee. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eila Lee and Davis Lincoln Coffeen.

Born in Burlington, Iowa, but raised in Pittsburg, PA, she was a 1963 graduate of Carneigie Mellon University, where she received degrees in Painting and Art Education. Later she took graduate courses at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. From 1971-1994, she and her family resided in Mansfield, OH, where she was involved in a wide area of community activities. She was a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor for 5 years; she was a Scuba Dive Master for 3 years; she taught drawing classes at the Mansfield Art Center, where her artwork was also on display; she was very active member of the congregation of First Christian Church; and she was the first female Commodore of the Mohican Sailing Club, where she pursued her interest in sailing.

As a resident of Avon Lake, she worked for five years at the Cleveland Boat U.S. Marine Store where she wasn't cruising the Great Laes on the family sailboat. She was also an active member of the LakeShore United Methodist Church in Avon Lake.

Memorial services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 30, at the Lake Shore United Methodist Church, 33199 Electric Blvd. Avon Lake, where friends may call from 5:00 p.m. until the time of services.

In Lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Linda L. Houck Memorial Fund, c/o Lake Shore United Methodist Church, 33119 Electric Blvd., Avon Lake, Ohio 44012 or to New Life Hospice, 5255 North Abbe Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035. Arrangements handled by the BUSCH-BURMEISTER FAMILY CHAPEL, Avon Lake.
