Irene M. Bereznay, 80, Former Lorain Resident

Irene M. Bereznay (nee Dargo), age 80, of Sun City, Arizona, and formerly of Lorain, died Sunday August 11, 2002 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph following an illness of two months. Mrs. Bereznay was born July 10, 1922 in Lorain and had been a resident of the city until she and her husband re-located to Sun City in 1995.

She was a graduate of Lorain High School with the Class of 1940-B and went on to attend Kent State University. She was employed as a medical transcriptionist for the former Lorain Community Hospital and retired in 1987 after more than fifteen years of service. She had previously been employed as a secretary and receptionist in the rectory of the Catholic Church of St. Peter (Lorain).

A former parishioner of the Catholic Church of St. Peter, she was a charter member of the Lorain Women's Club as well as a member of St. Ann's Auxiliary. Following her move to Arizona, she became a regular participant in the Sun City Senior Olympics and won gold, silver, and bronze medals in bocce ball competition. She was also a member of the Sun City Computer Club as well as the Sun City Quilting Club. Additional interests included golf and swimming.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years. Andrew A. Bereznay, sons: Andrew J. of Lorain, Jim of Grafton, and Jerry of Kingwood, Texas, daughters: Pat Sarraino residing in Avon, Chris Bereznay of Elyria, 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, brother; Eugene of Lorain, and sister: Helen Bereznay of Amherst.

She was preceded in death by her parents: John and Helen (nee Vargo) Dargo, and by a brother: Edward Dargo.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway - Lorain. Funeral services will be Wednesday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by her funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in the Catholic Church of St. Peter - 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery - Lorain.
